Jackie’s Paramount Adventure

This is a quick update on my most recent activity towards becoming a U.S. 9-Dance Champion. The dancer you see in this video is a result of great training from our beloved studio owner, Alec Lazo, and some practice of course :) This is only the beginning. Stay tuned to witness Paramount Ballroom transform one of its own into the Paramount 9-Dance Champion. I’m the one in the red dress!

Basic Ballroom Dancing Instructions

A Guide To What Ballroom Dancing Is And What Makes It Such A Hobby

Dancing is as old and as far reaching as the human race. Around the world, different cultures with different attitudes and traditions have created music and danced to it. A couple hundred years ago, some sects of Christianity forbade dancing because they recognized its passionate power. It is an amazing experience when the body becomes attuned to a rhythm and each movement is made because it is beautiful. In our everyday lives we don’t tend to think about the way in which we walk, or run, or hold our hands. Dancing gives us the chance to let our bodies be beautiful, to be the center of attention, to express music with our entire being.
Ballroom dancing is a category that covers a wide range of types of dances. It is the DanceSport that you see on television; it is also the social partner dances. There are two main types of Ballroom: Latin (and Rhythm) and Smooth (and Standard). These categories are distinguished more by the technique then by the country of origin. For example, Tango is not a Latin dance. There are three different types of Tango a Ballroom dancer might do: Argentine Tango, American Tango, and International Tango. The same is true of many of the dances, so the category of Ballroom dancing actually covers more than just Cha-cha, Rhumba, Merengue, Mambo, Salsa, Samba, Swing, Pace Doble, Jive, Waltz, Viennese Waltz, Tango, and Foxtrot. These dances all have an American version, an International version, and most of them have a distinct social version.

If you want to learn Ballroom dancing, you can focus on one type of dance or one division of dances. The dances are usually seen as the Latin dances where you move your hips, and the Smooth ones where you float and glide along the floor. Both forms are very sensual and create a strong connection between the partners. Not all forms of dance involve the one-on-one experience of Ballroom. It is a dimension that adds depth to the performance of a dance. That is why learning to dance with your husband, wife, girlfriend or boyfriend makes your dancing better. The connection between you will generate energy. The synchrony between two people who move as one makes Ballroom dance a great pleasure to watch as well as to perform.

The advantage of learning different types of Ballroom dances is that you can pick the one that suits your mood. Each dance has a character to it: Cha-cha is playful, Rhumba is sensual, Tango is passionate, Viennese Waltz is elegant. Also, because most music uses the same basic structures, you can use your dancing skills for more than just weddings. If you go to a club and there’s techno music you can dance a Samba if it’s in two or a Cha-cha if it’s in four.

In order to learn to dance, I recommend going to an actual teacher. You can learn basic steps from instructional videos or even books, but you can’t ask questions and there will be no one to tell you if you’re learning a bad habit. Lessons can be extremely expensive, but there are ways to minimize the expense. Most dance studios have group classes, parties, and outings for their students to benefit from. Once you are a registered student taking private lessons, take advantage and do as many groups classes and have fun at as many events as you can. These are just as beneficial to your dancing and add tremendous value to what you are paying for. The more you do, the better you get, the less you are paying in the end.

Don’t be intimidated by the dancers you see on TV, or the professionals who dance in clubs. It won’t be long before you and your partner are moving with such confidence and charisma that everyone who sees you will think you’ve been dancing all your life. It takes only a touch of technique and knowing where to put your feet and before you know it, you’ll feel like a pro. From the first moment you step onto a dance floor, you’ll discover just how fun and rewarding Ballroom dancing can be.

How To Dance, Just Do It.

“I just need to do it, and not think about it…”

What exactly is the IT that you are trying not to think about?

The natural curve of learning in any technique based activity requires a person to go though a process of: study, action, progress, and plateaus. A popular metaphor for this process is “analysis to paralysis” fortunately, we don’t stay paralyzed. With repetitive practice of correct principles and techniques a person can achieve breakthrough and ultimate naturalness, or doing IT without thinking! Isn’t that your goal anyways, just being able to dance?

Here’s a little tid-bit to help you get started in your ‘how to dance’ quest: Be a little more specific on the type of dance. You can determine this by the kind of music you like. But if you can’t figure out a particular dance you want to try, you may want to try ballroom. It encompasses all of your smooth and latin/nightclub dances. What do u do now? Look up some videos of a few dances you would like to learn. Go to our youtube channel and see if there’s anything there you may want to try. It is never a bad idea to stand up and try some moves in your own space :) Now what ‘moves’ am I talking about? Of course every dance has a particular basic that corresponds with it, but start out by just finding a rhythm. Bob your head to the music a little bit, or tap your foot. Do something. Moving around to music is a little easier when you can hear a steady rhythm. Once you find it, try a simple step-touch with your feet. Take your left foot, step to the side and now tap your right foot to the left one. Step to the side with the right foot, and now tap your left foot to the right one. Repeat. You can even say “step-touch step-touch step-touch” to yourself. Good work!

Taking private lessons is a great way of taking action to help you learn how to dance. You’re not going to be able to do IT without a little bit of help. It may take you a few lessons to get going, but sooner or later you will be able to dance. I have no doubt about it.

Just remember that partner dancing is a technique based activity that requires a person to use their brain and body simultaneously. Having fun with your dancing is directly related to the quality you will achieve regardless of goals, age, level, and experience. So how to dance? Just do IT, and have fun while doing IT!

The Ultimate Truth:
Make sure that you are thinking about the correct IT at whatever level you are at, and drill this IT repetitively until you do not have to think about IT anymore!

For Better or Worse

I can honestly say that I’ve had atleast 5 people in my life who have been through a midlife crisis, or are currently in one now. All of which cover a majority of unfortunate events. Everything ranging from cancer, divorce, unbearable stress, care of elderly relatives, and death of a loved one. Many times its been a combination of these troubling events. Transitioning between seasons in our lives can be worrisome or even physically detrimental ;However, there are ways of making these transitions before, during, and after midlife into the dawn of the better half of life.
What happens to many people is that once we hit a certain point in our lives we begin to question everything. “Who am I?” “Does my life count for anything?” “Is this the life i wanted?” These questions can lead us to selfish, reckless behavior that negatively effects us just as much. Both Men and women begin to partake in adventure sports, extramarital affairs, and substances to deal with midlife angst. But get this, you can learn to direct reckless behavior into more productive activities. Nancy M. Better, Writer for the New York Times and Smart Money, says:

“The first step is awareness — seeing midlife as a major transition. You need to be mindful of the fact that you may have 30 or more years to live after you turn 50. It’s a privilege that no generation has had before. You can sharply raise the odds of having a successful midlife crisis by doing whatever you have to do to integrate the lost parts of yourself. Look back and remember what you loved, what gave you joy, what your dreams were, and go out and do it. Listen to your soul now, so you will not have to start adolescence all over again at 49.”

Here are a few examples of what some of those people i know are doing who started making the necessary changes to be happy in the new dawn of their lives: My 44yr old mentor decided she was going to take up ice skating; My 52yr old dad decided he was going to go on more vacations to all the places he has wanted to see; My 38yr old long time family friend decided to Zumba some extra pounds away and help others do the same. There are many creative options for everyone, find the ones that are right for you. Find activities that give you a balance between mind and body. Feeling good and looking good not only creates a sense of overall well-being, but also recharges our batteries and that’s priceless! It’s the same reason why things like P90x, Zumba, Ballroom Dancing, and Yoga work for most people. Especially people ranging from 35-60, that physical and mental balance completely alters their life no matter what context they’re coming from.

Try some dance lessons here at the Paramount. Come be with a group of people who are already reaping the benefits of
taking some time out for themselves. Women and men just like you who are re-Valuing their lives. Simply being here will make you feel enriched with worth and purpose. Seeing the beach a block away catapults your mind into a mini-vacation every time you arrive. Go ahead and do something for yourself for once. Just Do0o0o it!

Welcome to the Paramount BlogRoom!

Thank you so much for your time! I hope you find the BlogRoom convenient and informative. Please feel free to check out our other channels, leave comments, and ask any questions. In the meantime, here is some more background insight to the studio :)

The Paramount Ballroom experience began with the vision that its owner Mr. Alec Lazo has created on the beautiful island of Palm Beach, Florida. With over thirty years in the making as an instructor, coach, competitor, judge, and studio owner, Mr. Lazo has successfully managed to bring together all of the best elements that could go into a dance studio. He has placed them in a location and venue could not be more appealing or suitable, coloring the venue with an ambiance that is sure to stimulate even the most discerning.

Before or after your lesson, a walk down Royal Poinciana Way will take you to some of the shops, restaurants, and sites that make Palm Beach a one-of-a-kind destination. By the way–the beach is only a block away.
