Why I Love Partner Dancing
Personally I love it that partner dancing is back in vogue. I grew up in the age of disco dancing and until I met my husband (I recently married for the second time at over 50), I had never danced with a partner. It’s a great feeling to dance holding someone you love, and these days there are so many choices – Salsa, Ceroc, Street Latin, Rock’n'Roll, Swing, Latin, Ballroom, – the list goes on and on!
Of course partner dances are also a great way to meet that special someone – it’s easy for two people to bop to pop music without talking to each other, but it feels downright rude not to speak to someone you’re holding on to! So partner dancing is a great ice-breaker if you’re a single.
A lot of people assume that you need to have a partner already before you go to a ballroom, salsa or swing class. True, if you are going to some of the more advanced classes you may find most people are already partnered off – but in the beginner’s classes, singledom is more common. Unfortunately for us, there are often more girls than men – so guys, if you’re shy about going to a dance class, don’t be: you’ll probably be welcomed with open arms no matter what kind of dancer you are!
When my husband first introduced me to ballroom and Latin dancing, I was astonished at how big a social scene there was. All these years, I’d been bemoaning the fact that there was nowhere for adults (as opposed to 16-year-olds) to go dancing -and all the time, there were socials running all over town, full of people my age! I didn’t know about them because they’re only publicised to those “in the know” – you have to go along to the classes to find out about them. The same may be true in your city, so it’s worth finding out. Just Ballroom Dance
